Step 1: Read
“Origins of the Utopian Idea,” by Rustin Quaide
Using a highlighter and a pencil, analyze the following annolighting handout of the article "Origins of the Utopian Idea." While you are answering questions on the right of the article, write down your thoughts about the article while you are reading.
Step 2: Watch the following Video Clip: Utopia-The Perfect World. After viewing the video, you will work with your partner and create a T Chart on the differences between utopian and dystopian societies.
Step 3: Stop and discuss with your partner. Both of you will answer the following questions:
1. How were the articles similar? Does the author seem to support utopian and dystopian societies? What sets these two societies apart?
2. What were some of the terms that were unfamiliar to you while you were reading? Does the author supply enough context clues so it would help you understand them easier?
3. Describe how a utopian society could eventually fall apart?
4. Describe how a dystopian society may seem perfect to the people in its community.
Write your answers on the same sheet of paper. Make sure that you have all of the names in your group on one paper.
Step 4: Research real-life utopian societies. Follow the link below to research utopian societies in America during the 18th and 19th Century. Use the handout provided to help you develop your research. After you have finished the handout, save it to your Google Classroom account. Turn it into the Utopian and Dystopian Webquest folder.

Step 5: You will work with your partner and develop a five to 8 slide Prezi on utopian and dystopian societies. Click on the Prezi hyperlink to take you to the Prezi Web tool. You will log on with the username and password that you created earlier. After you have saved your Prezi, you will copy and paste the link to the folder Giver WebQuest Prezi in the Google Classroom Folder. You will also find the rubric to this step on a link below. Please read over the rubric carefully since it is a group project.
